10 Minute Pre-Trip Checkup Can Pay Off

A properly maintained vehicle is safer and more dependable and will even save a few dollars at the gas pumps. Motorists should plan ahead to allow time to perform necessary maintenance themselves or at the local service facility.

Car Care Council offers three suggestions for a traveler's 10-minute pre- trip checklist:

  1. Check all fluids - There are several fluids that require attention: Engine Oil, power steering, brake and transmission fluids, and windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

  2. Check all hoses and belts - A belt failure can affect the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.

  3. Check the tires - Check tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, indicating the need for wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

Follow these tips to maximize fuel efficiency of your vehicle:

  1. Vehicle gas caps - about 17% of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.

  2. Under inflated tires - when tires aren't inflated properly it's like driving with a parking brake on. It can cost a mile or two per gallon.

  3. Worn spark plugs - A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in electrical and chemical erosion from heat.

  4. Dirty air filters - A clogged air filter creates a "rich" mixture - the proportion of gas to air is incorrect. This wastes fuel and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.

  5. Don't drive aggresively - Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33% on the highway and 5% on city streets.

  6. Avoid excessive idling - sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.

  7. Drive the speed limit - Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mile driven over 60 results in an additional 10 cents per gallon. Increase fuel efficiency by using cruise control.

Testimonials

  • My car overheated and I decided to bring my car her after someone recommended them. They were beyond helpful and even printed out information for me. They explained exactly what they were doing and why. It could have been more expensive, but they only charged the standard rate. I plan on going back again! Thanks Scott.

  • Scott was patient and thorough as was Alex. They took their time to really think through solutions for a rather difficult problem and then took care of everything really well. They were caring and competent. Scott explained the problems and possible solutions in a way that even someone like me could understand. I really appreciated that!

  • A Big thank you to Scott and the excellent staff at Folsom Auto Center for solving several problems in my car in one day, including check engine light with multiple codes and engine running rough, which had been progressively getting worse. Problem identified, new part, expert fine tuning and now it is running like new. They also provided shuttle service so I could pick up my car. First rate service and repairs!

  • Always the best service from them. Very thorough technicians and the best prices that I have been able to find. I have always done my own work on my car because I don't trust shops to work on it, but I happily take it to this shop.

  • Took a truck in to get a pre purchase inspection, the guys got the truck into the shop and onto a lift within two hours of me calling and they quickly discovered deal breaking issues. Everything was smoothe and professional from the beginning, I was even given a significant discount for the fact that they did their job so quickly. Could not have gone better. From now on all of my vehicles will come here for any and all issues. Customer for life

  • I went here after looking for a smog service. I think this location deserves 5 stars for being expedient and knowledgeable. I was explained in a way so that I could understand and I was not pressured to buy any service; in fact I was told to wait and save some money on a certain oil leak and that was important to me. This shop focused on safety and not unnecessary and/or costly repairs.

  • This place is great, the guys that work there are pretty cool. Ron ( the owner) Is actually a really cool guy and Alex is really nice. The best part is that it's a family owned. These guys are doing a great job for their community

  • Went in today to because the headlights on my pickup were not working. Ron asked if I could wait while he looked into it. He then had two replacement bulbs delivered in about 10 minutes, installed them for free (no labor charge!) and all I had to pay for was the light bulbs. Yes, I will be back for ANYTHING that my car may need. Highly recommend this shop.
